President John Dramani Mahama has announced the formation of a new Presidential Task Force on Global Health Governance to engage international and continental partners in revamping Ghana’s health governance system to meet modern challenges.
Africa’s health systems have long grappled with chronic underfunding, external dependence, and weak institutional frameworks, leaving many countries vulnerable to public health emergencies.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed these weaknesses further, underscoring the urgent need for resilient, self-sustaining health infrastructure across the continent.
Speaking at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra on Tuesday, August 5, President Mahama emphasized the importance of African-led solutions in health financing, innovation, and accountability.
“I am pleased to announce two significant commitments. First, the Presidential High-Level Task Force on Global Health Governance, a platform to work with global and continental partners to redesign the health system for the world we live in now, not the world of yesterday,” he said.
President Mahama also launched the SUSTAIN Initiative (Scaling Up Sovereign Transition and Institutional Networks), an African-led platform designed to align national budgets with health priorities while mobilizing funding from diaspora networks, sovereign wealth, and philanthropic sources.
He stated that the initiative will promote cross-border learning, innovation, and institutional accountability throughout the continent.
“I extend an open invitation to all nations represented here. Join us in building an African health investment ecosystem driven by purpose, powered by equity, and anchored in sovereignty,” President Mahama urged.
