GSS to publish regional GDP figures

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has announced plans to begin the publication of regional and district-level Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures following the completion of the ongoing GDP rebasing exercise in 2026.

The move, according to the Service, will enhance the availability of localised economic data to guide policymaking, investment planning and regional development strategies.

Rebasing, which involves updating the base year for calculating national accounts, allows new and emerging economic activities to be captured in official statistics, providing a more accurate picture of Ghana’s economy.

The exercise typically incorporates structural changes and new data sources to better model key indicators such as GDP, inflation and productivity.

Speaking at the Africa Business Conversation, a thought leadership event organised by AB & David, the Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, said the Service was currently undertaking reforms to modernise data collection and improve statistical accuracy.

“We are very mindful of regional and district data. We are currently embarking on a GDP rebasing exercise, and we believe that when we complete that exercise, it will provide the opportunity to possibly report GDP at the regional level,” Dr Iddrisu said.

He disclosed that the rebasing process, which began earlier this year, is expected to be completed by next year, 2026.

Upon completion, the GSS will be in a position to produce disaggregated GDP figures for all 16 regions and selected districts, offering greater insight into the economic structure of subnational economies.
