Ramaphosa Denies Trump’s Claims On Land Confiscation
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has pushed back against claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump that authorities in South Africa are confiscating land. Ramaphosa stressed that South Africa is a constitutional democracy firmly rooted in the rule of law, justice, and equality.
“We look forward to engaging with the Trump administration over our land reform policy and issues of bilateral interest,” he said.
Ramaphosa also noted that while the United States is an important political and trade partner, it provides little financial aid to South Africa beyond a major HIV/AIDS relief program.
His remarks follow a statement from Trump on Truth Social, where he vowed to cut off all future U.S. funding to South Africa unless a full investigation is conducted into allegations that the country is seizing land and discriminating against certain groups.
Trump’s claims stem from a long-standing debate over land reform in South Africa, a deeply complex and politically charged issue. During apartheid, racist policies forcibly removed Black and non-White South Africans from their land, reserving much of it for White ownership. After the country’s transition to democracy in 1994, its constitution included provisions for land redistribution and restitution.
Despite these efforts, land ownership remains highly unequal. Black South Africans, who make up roughly 80% of the population, own only a small percentage of the land, and poverty and unemployment remain widespread.
Ramaphosa insists that the government’s land reform efforts do not amount to confiscation but are part of a legal process aimed at ensuring fair and equitable land access. While there have been discussions within South Africa’s ruling party about expropriation without compensation, constitutional protections against such measures remain in place. Legal experts suggest that if the government moves forward with the policy, it could face significant legal challenges.
