Gov’t clears SSNIT arrears, inaugurates new board

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) that the government has fully settled all outstanding arrears owed to the fund.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in Accra, Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s pension system, stressing that the state remains current on all its obligations to SSNIT.

“I want to assure you that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT. We are determined to continue honouring these obligations to safeguard the pensions of Ghanaian workers,” the Finance Minister said.

His statement comes amid increased public scrutiny of the country’s pension schemes and growing demands for accountability and transparency in the management of pension funds.

Confirming the Finance Minister’s assurance, the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, stated that the government has not only cleared the arrears it inherited but is also up to date on its current commitments to the fund.

“We can confirm that the government has made good on all outstanding arrears and continues to meet its obligations as required,” Mr. Biney said.

The move is expected to restore public confidence in the financial health of SSNIT and strengthen trust in the government’s commitment to ensuring the long-term security of pensioners.

The newly constituted SSNIT Board, chaired by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, comprises representatives from organised labour, employer associations, and government. The board has been charged with providing strategic oversight and ensuring sound governance in the management of the pension fund.
