Film Development Fund Launched to Boost Ghana’s Movie Industry

The National Film Authority has officially launched a Film Development Fund aimed at addressing financing challenges and promoting long-term growth within Ghana’s film industry. The launch event, held at the Silverbird Cinema, also saw the inauguration of the Film Development Fund Management Committee and the Film Classification Committee to strengthen governance and regulation in the sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, NFA Chief Executive Officer Kafui Danku described the initiative as a major intervention for the country’s creative arts industry.

She said, “The establishment of the Film Development Fund is one of the most significant institutional interventions towards addressing a long-standing challenge within the industry, particularly in the area of financing and investment support.”

According to her, the Fund is expected to support filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors, and content creators to build sustainable businesses, create employment opportunities, and improve the global visibility of Ghanaian stories.

“The Fund is therefore intended to create opportunities for filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors, content creators, and industry entrepreneurs to grow more sustainable businesses, create jobs, expand audiences, and increase the global visibility of Ghanaian stories and content,” she added.

Kafui Danku further stressed the importance of collaboration, innovation, and effective regulation in building a stronger film industry.

“The National Film Authority recognises that the future of the industry depends on how well we all can collectively contribute to creating an enabling environment with the right set of regulations to ensure development through audience engagement, access, innovation and strategic partnerships,” she said.

She noted that the inauguration of the two committees would help improve transparency, accountability, and professional standards across the industry. The Film Development Fund Management Committee will supervise the administration of the Fund, while the Film Classification Committee will oversee content regulation and responsible production standards.

The newly inaugurated committees include representatives from the film industry, religious bodies, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders expected to guide policy implementation and support the development of Ghana’s growing film sector.

The NFA says the introduction of the Film Development Fund forms part of broader efforts to strengthen institutional support for the creative industry and improve the international competitiveness of Ghanaian films and content creators.
