USA is not an Island: Trump must tread cautiously with USAID saga
Some radical governance approaches were expected to characterise
Donald Trump’s new administration, and in the past few days, some government workers have sued the President for dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The American Federation of Government Employees and the American
Foreign Service Association have described the President’s action, which has led to a global humanitarian crisis as “unconstitutional and illegal.”
The suit specifically targets Trump’s order to pause all U.S foreign aid, which was followed by the State Department halting USAID projects worldwide.
By this singular act, some agency computer systems have gone offline, with abrupt lay off among some staff while others have also been placed on leave, just as there is a significant reduction in the agency’s workforce.
Critics argue that Trump’s actions are a blatant attempt to undermine the federal bureaucracy and push his own agenda.
The involvement of Elon Musk, who has been tasked with overseeing the reduction of the government workforce, has raised concerns.
Already, over 60,000 employees have accepted the proposed buyout for federal workers offer amidst resistance from labour unions and Democrats.
While the ongoing legal battles continues, it’s important for the Trump administration not to lose sight of the far-reaching consequences from the looming global humanitarian crisis, as the impact will not only be on the thousands of government employees, but the livelihoods of the millions of beneficiaries of the USAID across the globe.
The world now is a global village and any action by a ‘superpower’ like the USA can have dire consequences for other countries, directly or indirectly, with the tendency of reciprocating equally having disastrous costs on millions of populations. It is, therefore, important for the Trump administration to marry its political decisions with global interest for a better world for all.
