Govt May Fly GAF Stampede Victim Abroad for Care – Health Minister

By Maame Efua Kwaduah

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured that government is prepared to consider sending Sandra Baafi Boateng, a victim of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment stampede, abroad for specialised medical treatment if recommended by doctors.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament Mr. Akandoh, Mr. Akandoh emphasised that government is exploring all appropriate medical options, both locally and internationally, to guarantee she receives the best possible care.

Ms Baafi Boateng sustained serious injuries during the recruitment exercise held on November 12, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Providing update on her condition, the minister revealed that she initially received inpatient care under specialist supervision, with all medical expenses fully covered by the government to ease the financial burden on her and her family.

Since February 26, 2026, she has been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for further treatment. There, she is receiving comprehensive care from a specialist-led, multidisciplinary team. Her treatment includes rehabilitation and social support aimed at enhancing recovery, ensuring both her physical and emotional needs are addressed.

He noted that Sandra has remained bedridden since the incident during the 2025/2026 enlistment exercise and that officials are committed to providing continuous support until she fully recovers.

The Minister’s update highlights the government’s proactive response following the tragic stampede, which drew national attention to the need for safer recruitment practices and prompt medical intervention for affected individuals. Authorities continue to monitor her condition closely, collaborating with medical teams to ensure that her rehabilitation is expedited and comprehensive.

The Ghana Armed Forces recruitment stampede remains a sobering reminder of the risks involved in large-scale enlistment exercises, and the government has pledged to take all measures necessary to prevent similar incidents while prioritising the welfare of victims.
