Melcom awarded prestigious recognition

MELCOM Limited has been awarded the prestigious Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) Green Building Certification by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group for two of its locations.

The certified locations are Melcom Boundary Road in East Legon and Melcom Mall on Spintex Road.

This achievement marks a significant step in Melcom’s ongoing commitment to resource-efficient and environmentally responsible practices.

The Group Managing Director of Melcom, Ramesh Sadhwani, described the recognition as a moment of pride and celebration for the company.

He added that this award places Melcom among the global leaders in sustainable buildings.

He emphasized that the certification underscores the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact.

He stated that by reaching this milestone, Melcom has demonstrated its responsibility as a business to lead by example reducing its carbon footprint and maximizing resource efficiency.

Group managing Director also mentioned that the company is pursuing EDGE certification for several additional properties currently under audit.

He indicated that Melcom’s projects have incorporated cutting-edge designs, renewable energy investments, and sustainable materials to achieve environmental benchmarks.

According to Sadhwani, the company has invested approximately $2 million in solar energy, with a capacity of 2.5 MW spanning 12 locations.

He explained that these investments align with Melcom’s broader sustainability vision, which he described as not only environmentally responsible but also financially prudent.

“Sustainable development drives innovation, reduces operational costs, and enhances property value,” he said. “It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.”

Sadhwani emphasized that the certification marks the beginning of a more ambitious journey, and Melcom plans to set new sustainability targets, adopt innovative solutions, and inspire the industry to make green building the standard.

Group General Manager of Melcom, Francis Sam, emphasized that the company’s success is rooted in its unwavering commitment to providing a convenient, safe, and affordable shopping experience.

He noted that over 5,000 Ghanaians are employed across the company’s operations.

Sam also highlighted Melcom’s commitment to community well-being and environmental sustainability, underscoring its role as a responsible corporate citizen.

As the company continues to expand, it remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s retail industry, delivering quality and convenience to its growing customer base.

Senior Country Manager at IFC, Kyle Kelhorfer, highlighted the critical role of sustainability in global development.

He added that supporting green and climate-friendly initiatives is a vital part of IFC’s strategy.

He stated that their goal is to help  clients achieve their climate goals through both mitigation and adaptation. The EDGE certification, developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), acknowledges buildings that meet international standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of sustainable materials.
