Nine Arrested for Illegal Mining Under Alleged National Security Cover in Adansi North

Nine individuals have been arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities at Akatakyieso, a community in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region. The operation, believed to have been carried out under the false pretense of National Security backing, has sparked serious concerns among residents and local authorities.
According to sources, the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated operation involving the Ghana Police Service and the Adansi North District Assembly. Local officials say the group had been operating in the area for some time, allegedly shielded by individuals claiming to be National Security personnel.
The arrest has raised questions about the misuse of state authority, with community members expressing worry over how illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” continues to thrive despite intensified national efforts to curb the practice.
Speaking to the media, a police spokesperson confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are currently underway to uncover the full scope of the illegal mining operation. Authorities are also working to verify whether any genuine National Security operatives were involved or if the suspects were using forged identities.
Illegal mining remains one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental and social issues, particularly in the Ashanti, Eastern, and Western Regions. The government has in recent years stepped up its fight against galamsey, deploying task forces and tightening regulations. However, incidents like this highlight the ongoing challenges in enforcement and the potential abuse of power by individuals masquerading as officials. The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to face prosecution once investigations are concluded. Meanwhile, local leaders are calling for increased vigilance and transparency in the fight against illegal mining, particularly where state institutions are allegedly implicated.
