Ghana Stock Exchange Advances on Select Gains

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a strong uptick on Tuesday, with the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) rising by 178 points to close at 9,349.89, reflecting renewed buying interest in select counters. The Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI), however, edged down marginally to 5,027.13, highlighting mixed sentiment within the banking and insurance space.

Despite the slight dip in the financial index, the broader market remains firmly in positive territory for the year. The GSE-CI has delivered a year-to-date return of 6.61%, while the GSE-FSI is up 8.18%, underscoring sustained investor confidence in Ghana’s equities market amid improving macroeconomic signals.

Trading activity moderated compared to the previous session. A total of 3.6 million shares exchanged hands, valued at GH¢9.24 million, down from over 10 million shares worth GH¢46 million recorded on Monday. The decline in turnover suggests more selective positioning by investors, even as price movements remained upbeat.

Benso Palm Plantation (BOPP) led the gainers’ chart, climbing GH¢2.00 to close at GH¢66.00, reinforcing strong interest in agro-industrial counters. Fan Milk (FML) also advanced by GH¢0.30 to GH¢8.50, reflecting steady demand in the consumer goods segment.

Banking and energy stocks posted modest gains. GCB Bank (GCB) edged higher, while Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) recorded upward movement, signaling continued appetite for fundamentally strong blue-chip stocks.

In the broader market, Clydestone (CLYD) appreciated by GH¢0.03, SIC Insurance (SIC) rose GH¢0.04, and First Atlantic Bank (FAB) gained GH¢0.02 to close at GH¢7.80. Telecommunications giant Scancom PLC (MTNGH) emerged as the most actively traded equity, with nearly 1.5 million shares changing hands at a value of GH¢6.53 million, underscoring sustained liquidity and investor interest in the telecom sector.

On the downside, Cal Bank (CAL) dipped marginally by GH¢0.01 to GH¢0.80, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) shed GH¢0.03 to GH¢0.74, reflecting cautious positioning within parts of the financial space.

Meanwhile, activity in the fixed income market remained robust, with active trading in government bonds supporting overall capital market momentum. Market analysts note that sustained participation in both equities and bonds signals a gradually strengthening investor base.

The session’s performance reinforces the GSE’s steady upward trajectory, even as trading remains selective across sectors.
