The Manhyia Palace has directed a full closure of all major public institutions in the Greater Kumasi metropolis as the Ashanti Kingdom prepares to lay to rest the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, today, 18 September 2025.
Under the Palace’s directive, schools, banks, markets and other public places will remain closed throughout the day of the burial.
The sweeping order is intended to ensure a dignified, crowd-controlled environment as mourners and dignitaries converge on Kumasi to pay their final respects to the revered Queenmother.
Supporting the directive, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has issued a statement urging residents and institutions to comply fully.
The ARCC emphasised that the restrictions are a direct instruction from the Manhyia Palace and will be strictly enforced to maintain security and order during the high-profile traditional ceremony.
Essential services, however, are exempt. According to the ARCC, pharmacies, fuel stations, restaurants, transport operators and key utilities, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Company Limited, the Fire Service, the Ambulance Service and healthcare workers, will be allowed to operate.
To avoid confusion, the ARCC directed all exempted workers to wear their official uniforms, carry valid identification cards and use official government vehicles while on duty.
“All exempted institutions and essential workers are advised to cooperate fully with security personnel and other regulatory agencies enforcing the movement restrictions,” a statement signed by Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene noted.
The Manhyia Palace’s order underscores the magnitude of the Asantehemaa’s burial, which is expected to attract a large influx of mourners, traditional leaders and dignitaries from across Ghana and beyond.
Local authorities have asked residents to plan ahead, as schools, banks, markets and other commercial establishments will not open on the day of the burial.
The late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who served as the Queenmother of the Ashanti Kingdom, will be honoured with elaborate rites steeped in tradition.
The death of the Asantehemaa, was formally announced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Monday, 11 August 2025, during an emergency meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council held at the Manhyia Palace.
