GSE Records Highest Single-Day Trading Value

By: Rebecca Okine

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded its highest single-day trading value last week, with total transactions reaching GH₵17.4 million on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Economic Analyst at Zed, Emmanuel Boateng, has linked the surge in trading activity to rising investor confidence. He noted that both the volume and value of trades were unusually high for the week, pointing to a renewed interest in the equity market.

“The GH₵17.4 million turnover on the 9th of May marks a very high single-day value for that week,” he explained. “There was a lot of trading in terms of volume, but more importantly, the value was significant. It is indicative of very strong investor confidence.”

Mr. Boateng linked this positive performance to a shift in investor strategy, driven largely by declining returns in the treasury bill market.

“Many investors are shifting to other investment handles,” Mr. Boateng said. While we can’t confirm they are all moving to the stock market, the evidence suggests a clear reallocation of funds.”

Highlighting key drivers behind the surge, he pointed to MTN Ghana and the NewGold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) as the top-performing stocks currently contributing to the market’s momentum.

“MTN Ghana and NewGold ETF are the two fundamental stocks driving the surge,” he noted. “Increased liquidity from these equities is one of the clearest signs of growing confidence in the GSE.”

Mr. Boateng emphasized that the upward trend is also supported by improving macroeconomic indicators and strong corporate performance from listed firms.

“We’re seeing good strides in Ghana now, the economy is doing well, and the recovery we’ve been discussing appears to be sustained,” he said.

He added that the combination of lower fixed-income yields and the potential for higher returns in equities is encouraging investors to reconsider their portfolios.

“This implies a more active market environment, offering enhanced opportunities for both entry and exit strategies,” he said. Mr. Boateng concluded that despite tight monetary conditions, investor sentiment remains largely positive, and the GSE is likely to continue seeing strong activity if current trends hold.
