Police making strides against cybercrime – Interior Minister:

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured Ghanaians that the Ghana Police Service (GPS) is making significant progress in combating cybercrime, with particular focus on mobile money fraud, online impersonation, sexual extortion and financial cybercrimes.
He gave the assurance at the launch of the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month on Wednesday, 1 October, at Burma Hall, Burma Camp, held under the theme “A Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space.”
Mr Muntaka said the Police Service is advancing its work in five critical areas: crime investigation and digital forensics, intelligence gathering and threat monitoring, capacity building and specialised training, public awareness and stakeholder engagement, as well as inter-agency collaboration.
“It is gratifying to note that the GPS, through its specialised Cybercrime and Digital Forensic Unit, is far advanced in investigating a wide range of cases, including mobile money fraud, online impersonation, sexual extortion and financial cybercrimes,” the Minister stated.
He noted that the Police Service’s modern digital forensic laboratory is now capable of examining seized devices such as computers, mobile phones and storage media to generate credible evidence for prosecutions.
“This ensures that reliable evidence is produced in court to secure justice for victims,” he explained.
The Minister emphasised the importance of a proactive approach in the fast-evolving digital space.
“In this landscape, proactive intelligence gathering and threat monitoring are essential. The GPS is employing cyber intelligence, open-source intelligence techniques and internal data-sharing platforms to identify, track and neutralise threats before they escalate,” he said.
According to him, this strategy has already enabled the Police to uncover criminal networks operating across borders, thereby strengthening Ghana’s digital security.
Mr Muntaka also revealed that the GPS is actively training investigators, forensic experts and prosecutors in modern digital investigative techniques to build long-term capacity in the fight against cybercrime.
