EC reports smooth start to polls across Ghana

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed a successful commencement of voting in the December 7 General Elections, with nearly all polling centers opening as scheduled. Deputy Chair of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, provided the update during the first of a series of planned media briefings today.
“As of 7 a.m., approximately 99% of all polling stations had opened and were operational,” Mr. Tettey announced. He noted that all election materials were deployed ahead of time, and polling officials, including presiding officers and ballot issuers, were present at their assigned stations.
Biometric Verification Devices Operational
Regarding equipment functionality, Mr. Tettey reported that almost all biometric verification devices (BVDs) were working seamlessly. While a few stations experienced initial difficulties starting the devices, on-site technicians promptly resolved the issues, rebooting the machines or deploying spare devices where necessary.
“Currently, all the BVDs at polling stations are effectively working,” he assured voters, emphasizing the Commission’s preparedness to address any technical challenges swiftly.
Peaceful Atmosphere Across Polling Centers
Security personnel were also noted to be present at all polling stations, contributing to a calm and orderly environment. “We haven’t had any reported incidents of violence, quarrels, or disruptions,” Mr. Tettey said, commending the smooth and peaceful start to the elections. The Electoral Commission will provide additional updates at scheduled media briefings throughout the day, ensuring transparency and real-time information as Ghana votes.
