Electricity tariffs up 2.45% starting July 1

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45 percent increase in electricity tariffs across all customer categories, effective July 1, 2025.

The adjustment is part of the Commission’s quarterly tariff review mechanism.

The new rates will affect residential, non-residential, and special load tariff (SLT) customers.

According to a statement from the PURC, the upward review is based on an assessment of key economic and operational indicators, including inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel costs.

The Commission explained that the review is necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of utility service providers and to maintain a reliable power supply.

The adjustment was informed by a projected average inflation rate of 20.67 percent, a Ghana cedi to U.S. dollar exchange rate of GHS10.2949, and an increase in the weighted average cost of gas (WACoG) to USD 7.7134/MMBtu.

“The Commission has carefully analyzed the existing parameters and, considering the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians, has approved a 2.45 percent increase in electricity tariffs across the board and a 0 percent increase in water tariffs,” the statement noted.

For the third quarter of 2025, the generation mix remains unchanged, 28.8 percent from hydro sources and 71.2 percent from thermal sources.

The PURC also considered GHS488 million in outstanding revenues from previous quarters, as well as the costs associated with maintaining reserve capacity for grid stability.

Meanwhile, the Commission has announced that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter, with a 0.00 percent adjustment.

The PURC stated that current water rates are sustainable for the time being, offering some relief to consumers amid ongoing economic challenges.
