Gov’t Commissions GNS Pru to Boost Maritime Security and Naval Capacity
The Government of Ghana has officially commissioned the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Pru at the Sekondi Naval Base, marking a significant step in efforts to modernize the Ghana Navy and strengthen its operational effectiveness.
The induction ceremony, held at the Western Naval Command, featured a colourful parade during which the national and Ghana Navy colours were consecrated and formally presented. The event underscored the importance of the new vessel to Ghana’s maritime defence architecture.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, emphasised that as a coastal nation, Ghana must prioritise maritime safety and security within its broader national defence strategy. He explained that the country’s expanding blue economy, driven by offshore oil exploration, fishing, and maritime trade requires robust protection against evolving security threats.
Mr Genfi described GNS Pru as more than just an addition to the naval fleet. He characterised it as a strategic investment aimed at enhancing the Navy’s operational reach and responsiveness. According to him, the vessel’s improved endurance and advanced capabilities will enable the Navy to intensify patrols, secure offshore installations, and clamp down on illegal activities such as piracy, smuggling, and unregulated fishing.
He added that the ship would also strengthen Ghana’s contribution to regional and international maritime security efforts, particularly within the Gulf of Guinea, where coordinated naval operations remain essential.
Reaffirming government’s commitment to naval development, the Deputy Minister disclosed that the 2026 national budget includes provisions for the acquisition of two additional Offshore Patrol Vessels. These vessels, once delivered, are expected to further enhance sustained maritime surveillance and operational capacity.
The commissioning of GNS Pru therefore represents a strategic move to safeguard Ghana’s maritime domain, protect vital national resources, and reinforce the country’s defence preparedness in an increasingly complex security environment.
