Ghana–South Africa Strengthens Ties Through Sport and Business

Tennis is increasingly being recognised as a sport that goes beyond competition, combining recreation, discipline and international engagement while appealing to people of all ages. These attributes were prominently highlighted at the fifth edition of the Rainbow Nations Challenge, a three-day event that brought together stakeholders from sports, business and diplomacy to promote collaboration between Ghana and South Africa.
The event, organised by the Ghana South Africa Business Chamber, served as a platform for strengthening bilateral relations through a blend of sporting excellence, cultural exchange and corporate networking. From the opening day to the final matches, the tournament showcased how sport can be leveraged to drive economic and social connections.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President of the chamber, Tony Sekyere, underscored the organisation’s commitment to deepening trade relations between Ghana and South Africa. He noted that the chamber continues to play a vital role in facilitating business opportunities for its members while creating an enabling environment for growth.
“Our role within the business community is to foster a trading relationship between businesses that are connected to South Africa and Ghana,” he said. “We have quite a large array of members, and we try as much as possible to ensure that we provide them with the necessary support so that anyone trading here can access the assistance they need.”
Mr. Sekyere described the Rainbow Nations Challenge as one of the chamber’s flagship initiatives, designed not only to promote sports but also to strengthen unity and economic cooperation. According to him, the event has grown steadily over the past five years, gaining recognition both locally and internationally.
“This tournament is one of the flagship events that we normally hold on an annual basis,” he stated. “We started five years ago, and we want to use it to make an impact within the international community by fostering business, unity and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.”
He added that the chamber is looking to expand the initiative nationwide, with the aim of supporting Ghana’s broader sports development agenda while enhancing business opportunities for members.
“We are hoping that we can spread this across the nation so that we can tap into the national tennis programme, nurture talent and also create the business advantage that we are building for our members,” he explained.
The Rainbow Nations Challenge also attracted support from corporate partners, including South African Airways, which has been a consistent sponsor of the event. Representatives of the airline highlighted the importance of sports in promoting health, unity and international cooperation.
Sales Manager for South African Airways, Vera, explained that the decision to support tennis was influenced by the sport’s holistic benefits.
“We can take different sports, but we have decided to take tennis for now,” she said. “We believe it helps to exercise the mind, body and soul at the same time. That is why we decided to sponsor again, especially because we are part of the chamber and it is important for us to support this initiative.”
She further noted that corporate involvement in such events is essential in sustaining sports development while also strengthening ties within the business community.
The three-day tournament featured competitive matches involving both local and international tennis enthusiasts, drawing participation from corporate organisations and professionals. Beyond the games, the event created a platform for networking, knowledge sharing and building partnerships among participants.
The finals of the competition underscored the increasing role of sports as a tool for diplomacy and youth development. Observers noted that the event not only showcased athletic talent but also highlighted opportunities for young people to engage in sports as a pathway to personal and professional growth.
Acting High Commissioner associated with the chamber, Thando Dambala, emphasised the importance of expanding international collaboration through such initiatives. He pointed out that partnerships with various global chambers could significantly enhance the event’s reach and impact.
“If I can share with you, we have different chambers from the Netherlands, South Africa and countries from the United States working together,” he said. “These chambers are responsible for creating business climates that attract investors from their respective countries.”
Mr. Dambala noted that strengthening these relationships would help position the Rainbow Nations Challenge as a global platform capable of attracting investors from different regions beyond Africa. He stressed that such collaborations are key to boosting trade and encouraging cross-border investments.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in a variety of activities, including tennis matches, cultural showcases and business networking sessions. The programme culminated in a closing cocktail event, which provided an opportunity for deeper interaction among stakeholders.
Industry players and participants described the initiative as a unique blend of sport and business, noting that it offers a relaxed yet effective environment for building meaningful partnerships. Many expressed optimism that the event would continue to grow and attract more international attention in the coming years.
Experts have long argued that sports can serve as a powerful tool for diplomacy, helping to bridge cultural divides and foster mutual understanding among nations. The Rainbow Nations Challenge appears to embody this principle, demonstrating how sporting events can be leveraged to achieve broader economic and social objectives.
The Ghana South Africa Business Chamber has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the initiative, with plans to expand its scope and deepen its impact. Organisers believe that with continued support from corporate sponsors and international partners, the tournament can evolve into a major global event.
As the fifth edition draws to a close, the Rainbow Nations Challenge continues to stand out as a symbol of collaboration, unity and opportunity. By combining sports, culture and business, the event has created a platform that not only celebrates athletic excellence but also promotes economic growth and international partnership.
Ultimately, the success of the tournament reinforces the idea that sports can play a transformative role in society, serving as a bridge between nations while creating opportunities for development and cooperation.
