Too much fried food poses hidden health risks – Dietitian

A dietitian, Chelsea Obeng, has warned Ghanaians against the excessive consumption of fried foods, especially those purchased from outside, cautioning that such eating habits could lead to serious long-term health problems.

She noted that Ghana’s rapidly changing food culture, driven by urbanization, busy work schedules, and growing reliance on street and fast foods is encouraging unhealthy eating patterns. Fried foods, she said, have become a daily staple for many.

Speaking on Zed FM’s Business Breakfast show, Ms. Obeng discouraged the frequent use of frying in food preparation, especially with oil that has been reused multiple times. She explained that reused oil often contains harmful saturated and trans fats, which are linked to heart disease and other chronic illnesses.

“Many of the fried foods sold outside are prepared with oil that has been reused multiple times, which can turn into saturated or trans fats, both harmful to the body. Unfortunately, most vendors prioritize profit over your health,” the dietitian said.

She indicated that even when efforts are made to drain excess oil from fried food, a significant amount remains trapped inside the food.

“You may think you’re draining the oil, but it’s never enough. These habits may not affect you immediately, but over time, they will catch up with you,” she warned.

Ms. Obeng recommended healthier cooking alternatives such as grilling, baking, air frying, and skewering as safer and equally tasty options for those looking to reduce fat intake. She also advised against the common practice of skipping dinner entirely. While avoiding heavy meals at night is a good idea, she recommended light and nutritious options instead of going to bed on an empty stomach.
