Telcos roll out bigger bundles to cut internet costs

Telecom operators in the country have commenced rolling out 10 to 15 percent increases in data bundle volumes, in line with a government directive that took effect on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The decision, championed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, follows persistent public outcry over expensive internet services and limited data offerings.

According to the Ministry, the adjustment is part of broader reforms to make digital access more affordable and inclusive, particularly as the country pushes for greater digitisation.

Under the new regime, mobile network operators MTN, Telecel, and AT have revised their data packages to reflect the mandated increases. AT and Telecel customers will see a 10 percent bump in data across all bundles, while MTN subscribers will benefit from a more generous 15 percent increase.

High-tier bundles, in particular, have seen significant revisions. AT’s GHC400 plan now offers 236GB, up from 195GB. Telecel’s equivalent bundle has surged from 90GB to 250GB, marking one of the most substantial adjustments among the telcos.

However, MTN, Ghana’s largest mobile operator, issued an official statement on Tuesday indicating that a major technical problem had disrupted the rollout of the new data bundle increases. The problem, which occurred during the implementation process, affected several data packages, including the updated data volumes. MTN assured customers that its technical team is working urgently to resolve the issue and that normal services will be restored promptly.

Communications Minister Sam George has tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) with ensuring full compliance across the industry. He warned that service providers who fail to implement the new pricing structures in line with the directive will face sanctions.

Leading up to the implementation, telcos began sending notifications to customers regarding the upcoming changes. Most providers updated their websites and mobile apps to reflect the new packages, with some also offering promotional bundles to further entice subscribers.
