Accra Residents Embrace Christmas Spirit Despite Heavy Traffic and Congestion

As Christmas celebrations peak across the country, residents in Accra say the festive season is generally going well, despite heavy traffic and movement challenges across major parts of the city.
Many residents who spoke to ZED NEWS described the period as lively and filled with excitement, noting that streets, markets, shopping centres and transport terminals have been busier than usual as people prepare to celebrate with family and friends. However, they also pointed out that the increased movement has come with significant traffic congestion, making commuting within the capital increasingly difficult.
According to residents, major roads linking commercial and residential areas, including Madina, Circle, Spintex, Achimota, and Kasoa, have experienced heavy vehicular traffic, especially during peak hours. Some attributed the congestion to last-minute shopping, increased inter-city travel, and people moving around to attend social gatherings, church programs, and family events.
“Moving around the city has been quite stressful. What should take 20 minutes now takes over an hour, especially in the evenings. But we understand it’s Christmas, and everyone wants to be with family,” one commuter told ZED NEWS.
Others noted that despite the traffic challenges, the festive mood remains high. Many residents said the season is a time for reflection, gratitude, and togetherness, regardless of the inconveniences.
“Traffic is part of the season, but the joy of being alive and spending time with loved ones makes it worth it. We thank God for life and for seeing another Christmas,” another resident said.
Several traders also shared that business activity has been brisk, as people purchase food items, clothing, and gifts for the celebrations. While some shop owners expressed concern about congestion affecting deliveries, many acknowledged that the festive period remains one of the most important times of the year for sales.
For families, Christmas is being marked as a period to reconnect, share meals, attend church services, and reflect on the year’s experiences. Some residents said the challenges faced throughout the year have made this season even more meaningful, as people count their blessings and look forward to a better year ahead.
Despite the heavy traffic and occasional stress, many residents say the overall atmosphere remains positive and hopeful. They expressed optimism that the coming year will bring improved economic conditions, better infrastructure, and greater opportunities for all.
As celebrations continue across the capital, residents are calling on motorists to exercise patience and observe road safety, while encouraging one another to embrace the true spirit of Christmas, peace, gratitude, and togetherness.
