South African Staff Arrested for Smuggling Cannabis into Ghana

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a South African man at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis into Ghana.
The suspect arrived from Thailand on Monday, November 10, 2025. Acting on intelligence, NACOC officers carried out a detailed search of his luggage soon after he landed. During the inspection, they discovered more than 30 kilograms of cannabis hidden in vacuum-sealed packages inside his personal belongings.
Officials say the drugs were carefully packed to avoid detection, but airport scanners and further checks revealed the concealed parcels. The suspect was immediately detained and taken into custody for questioning.
In a surprising twist, an airline staff member working at the airport was also arrested for allegedly helping the South African bypass security checks. Investigators believe the two may have planned the smuggling operation together before the flight.
According to NACOC, preliminary findings show that the operation was part of a wider attempt to transport narcotics into the country using accomplices within the airport. Both suspects are currently assisting the Commission with investigations to uncover any other individuals or networks involved.
NACOC emphasized that it remains fully committed to the fight against drug trafficking and will continue to strengthen its monitoring systems at all entry points. The Commission also warned that anyone caught engaging in narcotic-related offences, regardless of nationality or position, will face the full force of Ghanaian law.
