Interior Minister Probes OSP Assassination Allegations

By Joyce Akosua Ayine

The Ministry of the Interior has initiated two major investigations following explosive claims involving the Office of the Special Prosecutor. The move comes after allegations surfaced that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng had survived two attempted assassinations, and that a senior official at the OSP was physically assaulted by police officers.

The issues were first brought to public attention on December 6, when the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications, Samuel Appiah Darko, appeared in media interview in Accra. During the discussion, he alleged that Mr. Agyebeng had been the target of two separate assassination attempts while carrying out his mandate. He also claimed that he himself had been handcuffed and beaten by as many as seventeen police personnel during an encounter.

In a statement released on Monday, December 8, the Interior Ministry said the allegations, if true, raise serious national security concerns and have the potential to undermine the country’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts. The Ministry explained that because of the weight of these claims, preliminary checks were immediately activated.

According to the Ministry, its early engagement with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng indicated that the alleged attempts on his life reportedly took place before the year 2025. Meanwhile, security agencies and police stations across the country have reported no official complaints or threats filed by the Special Prosecutor regarding such incidents.

Given the seriousness of the matters, the Minister for the Interior has ordered a full, independent investigation into both allegations. One probe will focus specifically on the reported assassination attempts, with the Ministry stressing that crimes involving threats to life do not lapse with time. A second inquiry will examine the claim by Mr. Appiah Darko that he was assaulted by multiple police officers.

The Ministry assured the public that the outcomes of the investigations will be communicated once completed. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals in Ghana, emphasising that every citizen must be able to conduct their lawful duties without intimidation or fear.
