GTDC CEO Highlights Digital Push to Attract Tourism Investors

By Esther Korantemaa Offei

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Professor Kobby Mensah, says digital innovation is driving renewed interest in Ghana’s tourism sector, even amid resource constraints.

In an interview on What Dey Happen on ZED FM, Prof. Mensah explained that online engagement is a key tool for attracting investors. “If I show you the report on tracking alone, views from countries like Japan, Germany, and the U.S. are coming in. Where they are viewing the platform from shows they have interest,” he said. He added that search engine optimization allows the agency to connect with investors without incurring costly travel expenses.

Prof. Mensah acknowledged that inquiries have not yet converted into finalized investments. “Now that we are getting inquiries, people are saying, ‘We are interested in this, we are interested in that.’ That’s where conversations start and matches are made,” he said.

Despite operating with “absolutely zero resources,” he said the GTDC has found ways to generate revenue and sustain operations. “Last year, we did more than 20 trips. With an average of 40 people per trip at 250 cedis each, Accra By Night alone covered fuel and salaries,” he explained. He also noted that growing demand has prompted expansion: “Tomorrow, we have Accra By Night six, which could be fully booked. We are also organizing programs for children and families, requiring multiple buses.”

Prof. Mensah said the focus on digital tools, coupled with community-focused events, demonstrates the agency’s commitment to creating a viable tourism investment climate. “Our top achievement has been reorganizing with digital and innovation,” he stated, emphasizing that online presence now complements traditional tourism promotion methods.

The GTDC CEO’s approach highlights how technology, strategic planning, and creativity are positioning Ghana as an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourism investments, even amid financial limitations.

This strategy, he says, is vital to ensuring sustained growth in the sector and drawing global attention to Ghana’s tourism potential.
