“Black Stars captaincy will always be up for debate”- Andre Ayew

By Lukman MUMIN, Accra

Andre Ayew believes the issues of captaincy at the senior national team will remain a topic of discussion for years to come.

Before succeeding Gyan as captain of Ghana, Ayew had spent close to a decade with the Black Stars, representing the team at various competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.

However, the smooth exchange of captaincy from Gyan to Ayew was marred with controversy before AFCON 2019.

Ayew missed the last two games of the Black Stars with Thomas Partey wearing the armband against Mali and the Central African Republic.

During a lecture at the University of Ghana’s Department of Psychology, Ayew admitted leadership at the Black Stars always solicits public opinion.

“The captaincy in our country will always be a topic of debate sooner or later. The next one who comes will spark another debate,” he said.

“The next one who comes in 10 years will also lead to another debate.

That’s how it is. Anyone who is going to be the leader of a national team should be ready for that because we can’t avoid it.”

Ayew holds the record for the most appearances in the Black Stars with 120 matches to his name.
