Ghana Stocks Gain GH¢3.7bn as Market Closes Week Higher

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

Ghana’s equities market ended the week on a positive note, adding approximately GH¢3.7 billion in value as steady investor demand lifted prices across key counters and pushed benchmark indices higher.

By the close of trading on Friday, December 19, total market capitalisation had increased to GH¢171.9 billion, up from GH¢168.2 billion at the beginning of the week. The rise reflects price appreciation across listed equities rather than the impact of new listings, underscoring sustained buying interest on the exchange.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced consistently during the week, rising from 8,678 points on Monday to 8,755 points by Friday. The gain of nearly 78 points, while moderate on a daily basis, confirms the market’s upward trajectory. On a year-to-date basis, the index is now up 79.1 per cent, highlighting the strength of equities performance in 2025 and rewarding investors who maintained exposure to the market.

Financial stocks once again led the rally. The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) climbed by 26 points on Friday alone to close at 4,642 points. Its year-to-date return now stands at an impressive 95 per cent, reflecting renewed confidence in the banking and financial services sector amid improved earnings performance, stronger balance sheets, and easing macroeconomic pressures.

Trading activity during the week was uneven, suggesting that gains were driven more by selective accumulation than broad-based speculative activity. Volumes peaked mid-week, with more than 4.6 million shares traded on Tuesday and about 4.8 million shares changing hands on Wednesday.

Interestingly, some of the strongest price performances occurred on days with relatively lower volumes. On Friday, fewer than 1.4 million shares were traded, yet turnover reached GH¢16.5 million. This points to increased activity in higher-priced stocks or large-cap counters, rather than widespread trading across the market.

In value terms, Tuesday was the most active session of the week, recording trades worth GH¢19.6 million and helping to set a positive tone for subsequent sessions. Even on quieter trading days, prices generally remained firm, indicating limited selling pressure and a willingness among investors to hold positions at higher valuations.

Overall, the week’s performance reflects a market that remains measured but optimistic. Rising indices, expanding market capitalisation, and steady gains suggest growing investor confidence, with the rally appearing grounded in fundamentals rather than short-term speculation.
