ECG Goes Fully Cashless, Cautions Customers against Payment Fraud

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a public warning to customers to be alert to fraudsters exploiting electricity payment processes, stressing that the company no longer accepts physical cash for any transaction.
In a public notice, the power distributor announced that it has gone fully cashless as part of measures to tighten internal controls, improve transparency and protect customers from financial scams. ECG further clarified that it does not demand payment for any service through unsolicited phone calls, text messages or informal channels.
According to the company, all payments for electricity services, including bills, reconnection fees and other charges, must be initiated directly by customers using only approved digital platforms. These include the ECG Power App and the company’s official short code, *226#.
The notice explained that the move to a cashless system is aimed at eliminating human interference in the payment process, reducing opportunities for fraud and ensuring accurate real-time recording of transactions. ECG warned that individuals or groups claiming to be staff and requesting cash or mobile money transfers outside these platforms are fraudsters and should be treated with suspicion.
The company advised customers to remain vigilant, particularly when they receive unexpected calls or messages demanding payment or threatening disconnection. ECG emphasised that it does not authorise any staff member or third party to collect cash or request payments via phone calls.
Customers were urged to verify all payment requests before acting and to avoid sharing personal information such as meter numbers, account details or mobile money credentials with unknown persons. ECG noted that increased cases of fraud have been reported in recent times, making public awareness and cooperation critical.
To support efforts to clamp down on fraudulent activities, ECG encouraged customers to promptly report any suspicious calls, messages or payment demands to its customer service line on 0302-611611. The company said timely reporting will help it track fraud networks and protect unsuspecting customers.
The power distributor appealed to the public to support its anti-fraud campaign by strictly adhering to the approved payment channels and spreading the message within their communities. ECG reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable electricity services while safeguarding customers against financial losses.
The company assured customers that it will continue to improve its digital systems to make payments more convenient, secure and accessible nationwide, as it works to build trust and efficiency in service delivery.
