Personality diversity key to building successful teams – Psychologist

By Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Organizational Psychologist Jeffery Boakye is calling on human resource professionals to go beyond qualifications and consider personality diversity when forming teams.

Speaking on the Business Breakfast show on Zed FM on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Mr. Boakye emphasized that the most effective teams are built on a blend of personalities, not just a lineup of high achievers with similar traits.

He explained that a strong team should include analytical thinkers, detail-oriented professionals, creative minds, sociable individuals, and those with strong focus, as each personality type contributes uniquely to the group’s performance.

“When teams are built with a strategic mix of personalities, organizations see better collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving than when everyone thinks the same,” he noted.

Mr. Boakye also highlighted the critical role of emotional and social intelligence in team dynamics, warning that being outgoing alone is not enough.

“Without emotional intelligence, you can’t read the room or respond with empathy under pressure,” he said.

He urged HR professionals to assess more than just technical competence, recommending the use of group activities, orientation sessions, and informal observation to evaluate candidates’ interpersonal and emotional awareness. The Organizational Psychologist also encouraged HR leaders to prioritize emotional intelligence and personality balance in recruitment, emphasizing that this approach is a proven path to stronger teams and better results.
