Ghana Poised to Become West Africa Steel Hub

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana can become a leading steel supplier to the West African sub-region through the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy. He highlighted the potential of continuous industrial operations to drive production, create jobs, and strengthen the nation’s industrial base.

Speaking on the prospects of the steel industry, President Mahama said, “With strategic investment and uninterrupted production, Ghana has the capacity not only to meet domestic steel demand but also to expand exports to our neighbouring countries.”

He emphasized that positioning Ghana as a regional steel hub would enhance trade within West Africa and contribute significantly to economic transformation efforts. According to the President, operating industries around the clock under the 24-hour economy initiative would increase efficiency, reduce production bottlenecks, and provide more employment opportunities across the industrial sector.

The President noted that steel is a critical input for infrastructure development and industrial growth, and a robust steel sector would support key government initiatives in construction, manufacturing, and energy. He added that expanding Ghana’s steel production capacity could also attract foreign investment and bolster the country’s competitiveness in regional markets.

Economic analysts have welcomed the 24-hour economy policy, noting that continuous industrial operations could improve productivity, reduce import dependency, and enhance Ghana’s position as a manufacturing hub in West Africa.

President Mahama concluded by stressing the importance of public-private partnerships and sustained investment in technology and infrastructure to fully realize the steel industry’s potential. “Our goal is to ensure that Ghana not only produces enough steel for our own needs but also becomes a reliable supplier for the entire sub-region,” he said.

The statement reinforces the government’s commitment to industrialization and highlights the role of the 24-hour economy policy in promoting sustainable economic growth and regional trade integration.
