Sam George summons MultiChoice over high DStv pricing

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has summoned the Country Manager and Board Chair of MultiChoice, operators of DStv in Ghana, to a high-level meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 3, 2025.

In a post on his social media platforms, the minister revealed that the invitation follows an initial discussion with the executives.

“I have invited the Country Manager and Board Chair of MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv. Following our initial discussions, I have directed that they return next week, Thursday, July 3, 2025, accompanied by the Group CEO of MultiChoice Africa,” he stated.

According to Sam George, the meeting is part of efforts to ensure that MultiChoice’s pricing structure reflects Ghana’s regulatory framework and economic conditions.

“The meeting seeks to align MultiChoice Ghana’s pricing strategy with the realities of the Ghanaian economy, ensure full compliance with regulatory standards, and implement urgent measures to prevent revenue losses,” he added.

The move comes amid growing public dissatisfaction over what many subscribers describe as unreasonably high subscription fees for DStv services in Ghana. Users have taken to various social media platforms to voice their frustrations, particularly over stark pricing disparities between Ghana and other markets such as Nigeria.

The Minister assured the public that his upcoming meeting with MultiChoice executives would yield positive results.

Critics argue that while Ghanaian customers pay the cedi equivalent of over GHS 500 for premium packages, subscribers in Nigeria pay significantly less for similar, or in some cases, identical content.
