Enhance safety measures at mining sites -Chamber

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called on the government to prioritize the safety of lives, protect investments made by mining companies, and ensure public safety in the wake of recent clashes between illegal miners and state security personnel at Obuasi, Ntotroso, and Kenyase.

In a statement issued following the incidents, the Chamber extended its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to individuals injured during the clashes.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries sustained during these incidents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and communities,” the statement read.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr Sulemanu Koney strongly condemned illegal mining activities, which he described as a threat not only to the safety of individuals but also to the environment and the sustainability of Ghana’s mining sector.

“Illegal mining undermines the sector’s contribution to national development. We urge the government to intensify efforts to protect lives and safeguard investments, ensuring that such unfortunate incidents do not recur,” Dr. Koney said.

A Call for Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration

While commending the government and state security agencies for their efforts to maintain law and order, the Chamber urged the adoption of a more comprehensive approach to tackle the root causes of illegal mining.

“The strategic importance of the mining sector to Ghana’s development cannot be overstated,” Dr. Koney noted. “It is imperative that all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional authorities, local communities, and the government, work together to address this challenge.”

The Chamber reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices, adding that collaborative efforts could enhance the sector’s benefits for all Ghanaians.

Condolences and Appeal for Calm

In its statement, the Chamber urged residents of Obuasi, Ntotroso, and Kenyase to remain calm and exercise restraint in the aftermath of the clashes.

“We reiterate our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and encourage all affected communities to maintain calm during this difficult time,” the Chamber stated.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines reaffirmed its readiness to work with the government and other stakeholders to ensure a safer, more sustainable mining environment while preventing future incidents.
