Find the right job for you, not just your resume

Career coach Lydia Quayson is urging job seekers and professionals to prioritize self-awareness when making career decisions, stressing that understanding your personality is key to long-term job satisfaction and success.
Speaking on Zed FM’s Business Breakfast show on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Ms. Quayson explained that many people accept jobs that do not suit them due to financial pressure, social expectations, or lack of proper guidance.
“Self-awareness is the foundation of good career decision-making. When you know your strengths, values, and work preferences, you’re more likely to find a role that fits and fulfills you,” she said.

In Ghana’s competitive job market, people often take roles out of necessity. However, Ms. Quayson believes that aligning careers with natural personality traits is not a luxury but a smart strategy for satisfaction and growth.
Research supports this view, showing that individuals who choose careers suited to their personality tend to be happier, more productive, and stay longer in their jobs. For instance, extroverts often thrive in collaborative or customer-facing roles, while introverts find fulfillment in research, analysis, or creative work.
Ms. Quayson recommends using personality assessment tools to guide career choices.
“Matching your career with your natural tendencies isn’t about limiting options. It’s about making informed choices that lead to lasting satisfaction and success,” she stressed.
Ms. Quayson also called on schools, universities, and employers to include personality and career assessments in guidance and HR practices to boost individual fulfillment and workplace productivity.
