Ghana, World Bank renew partnership to boost economic growth

Ghana and the World Bank have reaffirmed their long-standing partnership with a renewed commitment to drive economic growth and sustainable development across five key sectors.

This follows a high-level meeting between Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and the President of the World Bank Group, Mr Ajay Banga.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the ongoing IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings. Discussions centred on deepening cooperation and unlocking new opportunities in support of Ghana’s national development agenda.

The two leaders agreed to focus enhanced World Bank assistance on five strategic sectors: education, health, energy, roads and agriculture. These have been identified as essential pillars for the country’s medium- to long-term development ambitions.

According to Dr Forson, the renewed collaboration seeks to accelerate Ghana’s journey towards a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable economy.

The meeting also explored ways to align the World Bank’s country programme with Ghana’s fiscal and structural reforms under the IMF-supported Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The partnership is expected to boost investments that promote job creation, infrastructure development and human capital growth.

Dr Forson was accompanied by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the decades-long relationship between Ghana and the World Bank. This partnership has supported numerous initiatives in governance, financial inclusion and poverty reduction.

The meeting concluded with a shared pledge to ensure that future projects align with Ghana’s Reset Agenda, which emphasises inclusive growth, fiscal discipline and sustainable development.
