Law students should be current, strategic, adaptive – Nana Adjoa Hackman

Managing Partner for Africa Legal Associates, Mrs Nana Adjoa Hackman, has advised the graduating class of the University of Ghana’s University of Ghana’s law students to stay current, be strategic, and be adaptive as they pursue careers as legal professionals.

She stated that it is important for them to remain updated to provide effective counsel because of the evolving nature of the legal field.

“In today’s fast-paced world, staying current is essential. Laws and regulations change, and as legal professionals, you must remain updated to provide effective counsel,” she said.

She encouraged the graduates to think beyond traditional legal paradigms, and added that doing so would help them manage challenges effectively and generate value for their clients.

Mrs Hackman noted that adaptability is a key attribute for success in the legal profession, and therefore reminded the graduates that the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and unforeseen challenges is a hallmark of resilient professionals.

“Adaptability enables you to thrive in diverse legal environments and helps you to handle unexpected situations with confidence,” she emphasized.

She advised the graduates to strive for excellence in all things and confront challenges as part of the layers on the staircase to success.

She encouraged them to strive for greater heights while being mindful of the responsibilities that came with their profession.

“Remember that you cannot fly without wings, and wings are grown, not made,” she stressed.

Mrs Hackman added that it’s critical for them to maintain a positive mind-set and understand that they are not their accomplishments or failures, since this will keep them grounded while they work hard and continue to succeed.

“Build yourselves up, don’t shy away from trying new things. It will ensure that you are prepared to take on opportunities when they do come up.

Remember to stay consistent, keep on improving and performing. We are not perfect, in fact, we never will be, but don’t ever let that stop you. Instead, let dignity, honesty and integrity be your guide,” she said.

She drew on her personal experiences garnered over her two decades as a lawyer, to drive home the point of striving for excellence.
