The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has begun 2026 on a strong footing, with the equities market recording notable gains in January amid improved investor activity and a sharp surge in fixed income trading.
According to the Exchange’s latest monthly performance report, the benchmark GSE Composite Index posted a return of 2.69 percent, signalling renewed investor confidence and positive market sentiment at the start of the year.
The Financial Stock Index, which tracks the performance of listed financial institutions, outperformed the broader market with a return of 6.14 percent, driven largely by gains in selected banking and financial stocks.
Market activity also saw a significant uptick, with the total number of transactions rising to 38,477. This represents a remarkable 406.74 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, reflecting heightened participation from both institutional and retail investors.
Top Gainers Lead Market Momentum
Six listed companies emerged as top gainers during the month, contributing to the market’s overall positive performance. Leading the pack was CalBank PLC, which recorded an impressive gain of 15.71 percent.
Other notable performers included GCB Bank PLC, which rose by 1.36 percent, and Enterprise Group PLC, with a 0.28 percent increase.
Ecobank Ghana PLC also posted a modest gain of 0.14 percent, while Benso Oil Palm Plantation PLC and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC recorded gains of 0.06 percent and 0.03 percent respectively.
These gains were attributed to improved corporate performance expectations, portfolio rebalancing by investors, and positive outlooks within the financial and agribusiness sectors.
Decliners and Market Adjustments
Despite the overall positive market trend, a few equities recorded losses during the period. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC declined by 0.12 percent, while Societe Generale Ghana PLC fell by 4.46 percent.
The steepest decline was recorded by NewGold ETF, which dropped by 5.67 percent, reflecting movements in global gold prices and investor repositioning.
Fixed Income Market Records Strong Growth
On the Fixed Income Market (GFIM), trading activity surged significantly, with total traded volume rising to GH¢36.91 billion. This represents a 118.45 percent increase compared to GH¢16.89 billion recorded during the same period last year.
Government securities continued to dominate trading activity. Treasury Bills accounted for 37.75 percent of total volumes traded, while Government Bonds made up a substantial 60.91 percent.
Corporate Bonds, though still relatively small, contributed 1.34 percent of total traded volumes, indicating gradual diversification within the fixed income segment.
Outlook
Market analysts attribute the strong start to the year to improving macroeconomic conditions, easing inflationary pressures, and increased investor appetite for both equities and fixed income instruments.
The performance of the GSE in January sets a positive tone for the rest of 2026, with expectations that sustained economic stability, corporate earnings growth, and policy support will continue to drive activity on the local bourse.
As investor confidence builds, the Exchange is likely to see further growth in participation, liquidity, and market depth across both equity and fixed income segments.
