ECOWAS marks breast cancer awareness month in Guinea-Bissau
The ECOWAS Office in Guinea-Bissau, together with the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission (ESSMGB), has marked the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month with community activities aimed at promoting early detection and better access to healthcare.
The event, held on 22 October 2025, featured a health walk through the streets of Bissau and an educational session at the SOS Village School. Students, local leaders, and representatives from key national institutions participated to raise awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups and early screening.
Officials from the ministries of health, interior, women’s affairs, social development, and regional integration attended the event to show their support.
Speaking at the ceremony, ECOWAS Resident Representative Ambassador Ngozi Ukaeje and ESSMGB Force Commander Brigadier General E. O. Ojabo emphasised the need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, and timely treatment to save lives.
They encouraged women to seek medical attention as soon as they notice any unusual changes in their bodies.
Medical officers from ESSMGB also gave short talks on breast cancer prevention, symptoms, and treatment challenges, urging community members to make use of available health facilities for regular screening and check-ups.
The celebration is part of ECOWAS’s broader commitment to improving women’s health and strengthening community resilience across West Africa.
