By Christabel Oboshie ANNAN, Accra

As part of marking Ghana’s Independence Day, the Melcom Group of Companies has commemorated the life of their founder, Bhagwan Ramchand Khubchandani.

The celebration, held at the North-Kaneshie Melcom Branch, started with a health walk in the Kaneshie environs.

The event culminated with a donation of items to the South Tongu and Ketu South Districts of the Volta Region, which were severely affected by the Volta Dam Spillage.

Group Director of Communications, Godwin Avenorgbo, said that the group chairman’s legacy is celebrated as that of a visionary leader whose love for Ghana transcended boundaries from his early years.

He noted that his creative mind, coupled with remarkable business acumen, led to the establishment of the Melcom Group of Companies, with numerous subsidiaries and diversified investments.

“His journey began in Hong Kong in 1954, traversing Japan and ultimately establishing Melcom in 1989 with a single shop in Central Accra, which has since grown into a nationwide retail giant,” he stated.

Godwin Avenorgbo indicated that as the nation observes Ghana at 67, the Melcom family pays tribute to its founder’s enduring contributions.

He added that Mr. Bhagwan R. Khubchandani believed in physical fitness, and for that reason, the group added a health walk as part of the celebration.

According to Godwin Avenorgbo, this will help the group appreciate how he influenced the health quality for Melcom staff to be healthy.

He stated that Bhagwan Ramchand Khubchandani was also a consistent blood donor during his lifetime, which instilled a culture of giving back at the Melcom Group of Companies.

“His commitment to saving lives is exemplified by the Melcom Care Annual Blood Donation Exercise, a project that has consistently recorded high donations, including the remarkable achievement of providing 2184 pints in 2023,” he disclosed.

Mr. Avenorgbo said that as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, the Melcom Group will extend a supportive hand to the South Tongu and Ketu South Districts of the Volta Region, areas severely affected by the Volta Dam Spillage.

He mentioned that the company recognizes the plight of those who have lost homes and belongings, and through this gesture, they aim to assist in rebuilding lives.

Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, who received the items on behalf of her constituency, expressed her appreciation to the Melcom Group of Companies for their generous support.

She stated that their support is heartwarming and exemplary. She said that she will liaise with Assembly members, Chiefs, and the leadership in the various areas to distribute the items.

The items include food items, water, juice, milk, among other relief items.
