Link tax payment system to SSNIT, NHIS benefits – GRAWU

By Selorm GBORBIDZI, Accra

The Ghana Revenue Workers Union is advocating for the tax payment system to be integrated with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to incentivize citizens to actively fulfill their tax obligations.

This proposition was put forth by the National Chairman of GRAWU, Theophilus Ehun, during a special May Day Celebration organized by the tax authority to commemorate International Workers Day yesterday and to formally introduce its new Commissioners to GRA staff.

He drew comparisons to other jurisdictions where individuals who diligently pay their taxes receive special benefits for fulfilling their civic duty.

He emphasized the need to streamline the tax payment process by linking it with SSNIT and NHIS registration.

“For example, when a trader at Makola pays taxes, a portion of the tax can go towards SSNIT contributions and NHIS card renewal, or even provide additional advantages,” he proposed.

He stressed the importance of differentiating services between tax-paying citizens and non-taxpayers.

Commissioner General of the GRA, Julie Essiam, urged GRA staff to strive towards achieving the revenue target of GH¢241 billion set for the Commission this year.

She emphasized the necessity of unity and patriotic fervor in accomplishing this goal.

Madam Essiam acknowledged the crucial role of GRA staff as the foundation of the Authority, expressing gratitude for their dedication and hard work over the years.

She also commended former staff and Commissioners for their contributions to the GRA, acknowledging the debt of gratitude owed to them.

Aligning with the theme of this year’s May Day celebrations, ‘Election 2024: the role of workers and social partners in securing peaceful elections,’ Essiam reminded workers of the importance of prioritizing the nation’s interests in the upcoming elections. She emphasized the need to reject any activities that could potentially disrupt the general elections in December, urging citizens to prioritize national unity over individual agendas.
