BoG hosts Fintech networking event to boost global collaboration

In an effort to strengthen global partnerships in financial technology (fintech) and promote Ghana as a key player in the digital financial landscape, the Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with DC Fintech Week 2024 organizers, hosted a high-level networking event on October 21, 2024, at the Hay-Adams in Washington, DC.

The event took place alongside the IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings, underscoring its significance within the international financial community.

Led by Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the event featured insights on the role of fintech in Africa’s economic transformation and the value of cross-border partnerships in fostering innovation. Madam Hajia Alima Mahama, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, served as the Guest of Honour, with senior representatives from Ghana’s fintech and regulatory spheres, including Mr. Romeo Bugyei, Chairman of the Ghana Technology Chamber, and Dr. Henry Benyah, Chairman of FastPace Transfer Limited, also in attendance.

The event brought together a diverse audience of senior policymakers, regulators, private sector leaders, and influential figures from the U.S. fintech policymaking community. Discussions centered on the importance of strategic collaboration between the U.S. and Ghana to build inclusive, resilient fintech ecosystems that cater to underserved populations and advance digital financial access across Africa.

Moderated by prominent voices in the fintech policy space, the panel included Prof. Chris Brummer, founder of DC FinTech Week; Charla Ouertatani, Director at the House Financial Services Committee; Kwame A. Oppong, Director of FinTech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana; and Dante Disparte, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Policy at Circle. These experts highlighted shared interests and identified key areas where Ghana and the U.S. can collaborate, including regulatory best practices, digital currency advancements, and secure financial inclusion strategies. The networking event underscored Ghana’s ongoing commitment to building a dynamic fintech sector and provided a platform to explore investment opportunities, innovation, and partnerships that can accelerate fintech growth in both Ghana and the broader African market.
