Excessive Paracetamol Use Can Cause Liver Damage – Medical Officer

Medical Officer Kenneth Graham-Arthur has cautioned Ghanaians against the excessive use of paracetamol and self-medication, warning that the practice could lead to liver injury and jaundice.

His comments come as this month marks Jaundice Awareness Month, dedicated to creating awareness about the early signs and prevention of jaundice.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on ZED 101.9FM, Dr. Graham-Arthur said jaundice is often linked to liver related conditions, including hepatitis infections, alcohol abuse and the intake of substances that are harmful to the liver.

According to him, one of the major but often overlooked causes of liver damage in Ghana is the misuse of paracetamol for minor headaches and body pains.

“One thing we notice in Ghana is that we abuse paracetamol for every headache or body pain that we have,” he stated.

Dr. Graham-Arthur explained that medications such as paracetamol are processed through the liver and excessive intake places unnecessary pressure on the organ.

“The more you take these medications, the more work you give to the liver. At a point, the medication stops helping you and becomes toxic to the body, causing liver injury and jaundice,” he explained.

He advised the public to take medications only as prescribed by qualified medical professionals and to avoid self-medication.

The medical officer also encouraged Ghanaians to know their hepatitis status and take advantage of available vaccination programmes to prevent infections that may lead to jaundice.

“We have vaccines that are available for free. People should vaccinate to prevent hepatitis. If you already have the condition, many government hospitals provide medication and treatment support,” he said.

Dr. Graham-Arthur further urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to protect the liver and reduce the risk of liver related diseases.

“The whole issue about jaundice is centred on the liver, so people must take care of themselves in ways that protect the liver,” he noted.

He advised people to stay physically active, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, maintain balanced diets and manage their weight to reduce fat accumulation in the liver.

According to him, obesity and unhealthy living habits can contribute to fatty liver disease, which may eventually lead to liver complications and jaundice if not properly managed.
