Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), describing it as “a stellar performance.”
Speaking at the opening session of the 3rd edition of the Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum held at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Dr. Chambas praised Akufo-Addo’s commitment to democratic principles at a time when some African leaders were clinging to power beyond their mandates.
The two-day forum, themed ‘Migration and Societal Resilience in a Multipolar World Order: Addressing Conflicts and Building Peace in Africa,’ brought together key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues facing the continent.
During his address, Dr. Chambas highlighted President Akufo-Addo’s firm stance against electoral malpractices, noting that Ghana would not tolerate postponements of elections beyond the mandated terms of office.
While expressing concern over delayed elections in another African country, Dr. Chambas emphasized the importance of upholding democratic norms and urged swift action to ensure peaceful transitions of power.
Touching on the forum’s theme, Dr. Chambas referenced the African Union Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation (Niamey Convention), which underscores the need for effective border management to promote peace, security, and integration on the continent.
He reiterated the African Union’s commitment to facilitating border dispute resolution and fostering seamless movement of people, goods, services, and capital among member states.
The remarks by Dr. Chambas underscored the critical role of democratic governance and regional cooperation in advancing peace and stability across Africa.
As discussions at the forum continue, participants are expected to explore actionable strategies to address migration challenges and strengthen societal resilience in an evolving global landscape.
