Celestine Donkor Shares Journey Into Full-Time Ministry

Award-winning gospel musician Celestine Donkor has opened up about her journey into full-time music ministry, revealing that her calling evolved through life experiences rather than a dramatic spiritual encounter.

Growing up in Abeka, a suburb of Accra, Donkor described herself as a shy and uncertain young girl with little clarity about her future. However, a remark from her Class Six teacher would later prove prophetic. Despite excelling academically, her report card noted that she was “highly interested in music.”

After completing senior high school, she faced a difficult decision: pursue higher education exclusively or commit fully to music. She chose to continue her studies while nurturing her musical talent.

Even then, music opened unexpected doors, including scholarships and support. Still, she hesitated to embrace it as a lifelong calling. Her turning point, she said, came after she began recording professionally and released her early songs.

“One testimony changed everything for me. Someone told me a song stopped them from committing suicide. That was the point for me. If this is impacting people and saving lives, then this is what I need to do,” Donkor recounted.

Following that experience, she began praying intentionally about her ministry, embarking on personal retreats and seeking divine inspiration for songs that would uplift others.

Her first official single, “Supernatural,” marked her debut as a solo artiste after years of backing vocals and collaborations. “It was different. It talked about waking up every day looking forward to miracles, signs, and wonders,” she explained.

At a time when many gospel songs centered on hardship, “Supernatural” delivered a message of hope and positive expectation. The single earned strong public reception and won Best Gospel Video, cementing her place in Ghana’s gospel industry.

As she marks 20 years in ministry, Donkor is preparing to launch a book titled ’20 Lessons in My 20 Years Journey’, reflecting on the experiences that have shaped her faith and career.
