Inflation Erodes Purchasing Power, Puts Strain on Businesses and Individuals – Economic Analyst

Economic analyst Emmanuel Boateng has highlighted the severe impact of Ghana’s rising inflation on individuals and businesses, stressing that inflation erodes purchasing power while salaries remain stagnant.
Boateng explained that inflation directly affects an individual’s ability to afford goods and services with the same amount of money. When inflation increases but salaries remain unchanged, the real value of income diminishes, making it difficult for people to maintain their previous standard of living. “Once inflation takes away a portion of your income, you can no longer consume the same quantity or quality of goods as before” he said.
He further pointed out that inflation has also significantly affected returns on investments, such as Treasury bills, which have seen lower yields in recent times. This he said, negatively impacts individuals looking for safe investment options and businesses that rely on such financial instruments for capital preservation.
Businesses, he added, are facing even greater difficulties due to the rising cost of operations. High inflation increases production costs, making it expensive for companies to sustain their operations. “When business cost goes up it affects profit margins, if you are in business and your profit margin is affected you need to make financing decisions and investment decision” he added. This situation makes it challenging for businesses to grow, expand, or even maintain their workforce, leading to potential job losses and economic slowdowns. To manage these financial hurdles, Boateng advised individuals and businesses to make strategic financial decisions. “You need to plan your finances carefully, adjust your spending habits, and explore alternative income sources to cushion yourself against the effects of inflation” he advised. Businesses, he recommended, should adopt cost-effective measures and innovative strategies to remain competitive in an increasingly difficult economic climate.
