Black Queens coach Kim Bjorkegren eyes WAFCON trophy

By Lukman MUMIN, Accra

Head coach of the women’s senior national team Kim Lars Bjorkegren has disclosed his ambition to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after opening camp to continue preparations ahead of the tournament.

The Black Queens trainer has invited 31 players, 24 who are home-based, for a nine-day camp at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.

Bjorkegren has been impressed with the response from the players as he prepares a team capable of winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“For me, to see all the players in Ghana is impossible. When I am here, I maybe have the chance to watch one game at 3pm. But if there are no more games later, I can’t see all the players. So this was a great chance for me to bring many players to get to know them on and off the pitch,” he told 3 Sports.

Ghana is making a return to the WAFCON for the first time since 2018. The three-time runners up have been drawn in a tricky group which features champions South Africa, Tanzania and Mali.

Despite the challenge ahead, Bjorkegren remains hopeful of success in Morocco in July.

“For me, it is simple to win the gold medal. You need to take it step by step and I know we are not going to be a favorite for people outside of Ghana. There are some 5 nations who have a bigger chance to win it. We need to qualify from the group stage. From there its 3 games and I know  we can do it,” he said.
