Nkwanta North records first Mpox case
The Nkwanta North District in the Oti Region has confirmed its first case of mpox, prompting immediate action from local health authorities to contain the viral disease and raise public awareness.
District Health Director, Mr Eric Kojo Agboka, revealed the case during a press briefing aimed at calming public anxiety and educating residents on the virus. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a zoonotic infection that spreads from animals to humans and between people.
The patient had recently travelled from the busy Konkomba market in Accra and began showing symptoms including fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes. These signs led to swift medical intervention and laboratory testing, which confirmed the diagnosis.
Mr Agboka urged residents to remain alert and seek medical attention if they notice any unusual symptoms.
“Early detection is key. We are intensifying surveillance and public education to ensure the community is well-informed,” he said.
District Chief Executive, Mr Isaiah Dordoe, echoed the call for community cooperation, stressing that the fight against mpox requires collective effort.
“We are working hand in hand with the health directorate to prevent further spread. Contact tracing has commenced and sensitisation campaigns are underway,” he added.
The District Health Directorate has assured the public of regular updates and continued monitoring of the situation.
