Bond market turnover surges to GH¢2.43bn

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

Trading activity on Ghana’s secondary bond market strengthened significantly last week, with total turnover surging by 29.99 per cent to GHS2.43 billion, up from GHS1.87 billion recorded the previous week.

The increase in trading volumes reflects improving market liquidity and growing investor confidence amid expectations of the government’s return to the primary bond market in the coming months.

According to data compiled from the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM), the February 2027 maturity led the week’s activity, accounting for GHS591.25 million in traded volumes, the highest among all outstanding maturities.

The 2027 to 2030 bond segment remained the most actively traded, capturing 42.9 per cent of total market volumes at a weighted average yield of 15.68 per cent.

Meanwhile, longer-dated securities maturing between 2031 and 2038 followed closely, contributing the remaining 57.1 per cent of total market turnover. These papers were traded within a narrow yield corridor of 15.73 to 15.81 per cent, indicating relative price stability across the curve.

Commenting on the market’s performance, Databank Research noted that the pickup in activity was supported by improved liquidity conditions and sustained demand within the belly of the yield curve.

“We expect market activity to remain steady, supported by improved liquidity and sustained interest in the belly of the curve, where risk-adjusted returns remain attractive,” the investment research firm said.

The firm tone of the bond market follows a period of cautious optimism among investors, buoyed by Ghana’s ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts under the IMF-supported programme and relative stability in the local currency.
