GSA warns against unjustified delay charges at ports

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has issued a strong caution to the shipping community, emphasizing that no shipper using Ghanaian ports should bear the cost of delays not caused by them.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the GSA urged cargo interest holders, consignees, and service providers to report any such charges promptly for investigation and possible refund. The directive comes in response to growing concerns over delays at the Tema Port, attributed to systemic challenges.

The authority highlighted significant disruptions in the delivery and evacuation of containers, citing recurring issues such as scanner breakdowns at the MPS Terminal 3 and system glitches within the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS). These challenges have had a severe impact on the cargo clearance process.

While acknowledging efforts to resolve these persistent issues, the GSA reiterated its commitment to protecting shippers from undue financial burdens. Stakeholders are encouraged to report incidents involving unwarranted charges to ensure accountability and fairness within Ghana’s port operations. The GSA continues to monitor the situation closely and engage relevant authorities to mitigate the impact of these challenges on the shipping community.
