By Daniel ODURO, Accra

Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku and winger Joseph Paintsil have both offered an unqualified apology to the country following the Black Stars’ disappointing campaign in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Taking to their various social media handles the players admitted that they had let the country down and promised to do better in the future.

Djiku who was one of the standout performers in the tournament for Ghana wrote, “ Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of the competition, but if you only knew how grateful we are to have been supported by you, our Ghanaian fans.. “

His apology was followed by that of Paintsil who said  on X “ Sincere apologies to the good people of Ghana. We are truly sorry for not meeting your expectations.Important lessons to take away from this unforgettable experience.💔

Thank you for coming through with your support in our low moments.. “

The Black Stars were eliminated from the Group stages of the tournament, after failing to register a win in any of the three games they played at the tournament. A 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde was followed by a 2-2 draw with both Egypt and Mozambique ensuring that Ghana finished the Group stages with only 2 points .

It is the second successive AFCON that the Black Stars have been knocked out in the first round.

The poor performances have led to widespread anger and criticism with many calling for the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association. The 2023 AFCON debacle has led to the firing of Coach Chris Hughton
