Article Wan reignites debate on ‘Play Ghana’ and the fight for Sonic Identity

Ghanaian hitmaker Article Wan has sparked a deeper conversation about the future of Ghanaian music, arguing that while artistes continue to break barriers globally, the country risks losing its core sonic identity.

In a discussion on Culture Daily, he acknowledged that the modern soundscape is shifting from traditional highlife and hip-life toward global Afro-fusion but insists his craft remains rooted in Ghanaian music foundations.

“We are moving away from the hip-life, high-life sound. I’m still trying my best to do Ghana sound… It’s difficult, but I keep building.”

From hits like APITI, FEEL OKAY and his collaboration with Patapaa, Article Wan says elements of indigenous rhythms are still intentionally embedded in his music even when infused with dancehall vocal texture and Afrobeats bounce.

While the conversation opened with concerns that Ghana is abandoning its core genres, Article Wan clarified that fusion isn’t running; it’s evolving. “You have to do fusion to fit in. If I play high-life and you feel reggae inside, people from the reggae side will connect too.”

For him, the process isn’t calculated it’s spiritual. The Culture Squad also debated the success of the Play Ghana agenda, a national effort to prioritise homegrown music. The tension emerged between two interpretations: Play Ghana as supporting Ghanaian artistes vs Play Ghana as protecting the Ghanaian sound identity

Article Wan aligned with the latter: “Play Ghana is to establish Ghanaian genres for their uniqueness. Not just pushing artistes but pushing a sound that represents Ghana anywhere it plays.”

The Culture Squad acknowledged major progress like chart presence, DJs prioritising local music, producer influence and global recognition. But the missing piece, according to the discussion, is institutionalising genre the way Nigeria did with Afrobeats or South Africa with Amapiano.

In the spirit of cultural grounding, Article Wan is bringing his sonic identity back to the streets with his upcoming concert: LINK-UP CONCERT happening on the 22nd November, at Abossey Okai, Ayikai Street 6 PM
