Gold and Cocoa prices set to soar in 2025

Gold and cocoa are expected to perform strongly in 2025, buoyed by geopolitical tensions, interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve, and supply constraints. However, Brent crude oil prices are predicted to decline as global energy dynamics shift.

Gold: A Safe-Haven Asset in Uncertain Times

According to a report by Databank Research, gold prices are projected to rise significantly in 2025, trading between $2,600 and $3,100 per ounce.

This bullish outlook is driven by prolonged geopolitical tensions, which are expected to increase the demand for gold as a safe-haven asset. Additionally, anticipated interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve in 2025 could further bolster gold prices.

“We are optimistic about a recovery in gold prices throughout 2025 as geopolitical uncertainties drive safe-haven demand. Following the January 2025 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, we anticipate gold prices could range between $2,600 and $3,100 per ounce,” the report stated.

Opportunities for Local Investors in Ghana

The report also highlights opportunities for Ghanaian investors to benefit from rising global gold prices. It recommends diversifying portfolios with assets such as the New Gold ETF and the Bank of Ghana’s Ghana Gold Coin (GGC). These investments not only allow investors to tap into higher gold prices but also provide a hedge against the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Cocoa Prices Surge Amid Supply Challenges

Cocoa prices are forecast to climb significantly in 2025, with estimates ranging between $7,000 and $9,600 per metric ton. This increase is attributed to supply constraints in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, the world’s top cocoa producers.

Adverse weather conditions and illegal gold mining in Ghana have affected cocoa farms, while the recovery from these challenges has been slow. Additionally, the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which takes effect in early 2025, is expected to further tighten supply by imposing restrictions on cocoa linked to deforestation.

“The EUDR will likely keep prices elevated amid strong global demand for chocolate,” the report noted.

Brent Crude Oil to Decline Amid Energy Transition

In contrast to gold and cocoa, Brent crude oil prices are expected to decline in 2025, trading below $76 per barrel. This outlook reflects high US oil inventories, economic challenges in major consumer regions like China and North America, and a global shift toward cleaner energy sources.

“Global oil demand growth is projected to decline from 1.74 million barrels per day (bpd) to 1.64 million bpd in 2025 as economic uncertainties and the transition to alternative energy take hold,” Databank Research stated.

The decline in Brent crude prices underscores the ongoing transition to sustainable energy and slowing consumption amid economic uncertainties.

Implications for Ghana

The projected performance of gold and cocoa could provide a much-needed boost to Ghana’s economy, as these commodities are among its top exports. Higher gold prices could improve foreign exchange inflows and support local mining activities, while elevated cocoa prices could benefit farmers and the broader agricultural sector.

However, the decline in Brent crude prices might offer mixed outcomes. While lower oil prices could reduce import costs for Ghana, it could also impact revenue from crude oil exports, emphasizing the need for economic diversification. As 2025 approaches, Ghana will likely need to navigate these shifting dynamics carefully, leveraging opportunities in gold and cocoa while preparing for the challenges posed by declining oil prices.
