Financial, consumer stocks boost GSE rally

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended last week on a strong note, buoyed by renewed investor interest in financial and consumer stocks, which pushed the market’s capitalisation past GH¢168 billion and kept year-to-date gains firmly above 70 per cent.

Trading for the week, spanning October 13 to 17, reflected a quiet but confident market mood. Momentum gathered midweek and surged on Friday, when activity peaked with 2.2 million shares valued at GHS8.29 million changing hands, the single highest turnover of the five trading sessions.

In all, the week closed with a total of 6.7 million shares traded, valued at approximately GHS25.8 million.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) added 6.18 points to close at 8,495.93, while the Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) gained 43.29 points to finish at 4,063.62.

The performance extended the exchange’s impressive year-to-date rally to 73.79 per cent for the broader market and 70.68 per cent for financial equities, consolidating the GSE’s reputation as one of Africa’s top-performing stock markets in 2025.

Market capitalisation climbed from GHS166.65 billion at the start of the week to GH¢168.08 billion by the close of trading on Friday, an increase of GHS1.44 billion, equivalent to 0.86 per cent growth in just five days.

Fan Milk and Benso Lead Market Gainers

Investor activity was concentrated in select blue-chip counters. Fan Milk PLC emerged as the week’s standout performer, advancing 7.14 per cent to close at GHS7.50 amid optimism in the consumer goods segment.

Benso Palm Plantation (BOPP) followed with a 2.47 per cent rise to GHS39.00, driven by steady global palm oil prices and improved investor confidence in agribusiness stocks.

The financial sector also showed renewed vigour. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) added five pesewas to close at GHS1.00, while Société Générale Ghana inched up one pesewa to GHS2.32, extending recent modest gains.

Telecommunications giant Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana), however, slipped slightly by 0.03 pesewa to end at GHS4.40, trimming a fraction off the day’s overall advance. The NewGold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) also edged lower to GHS448.56, reflecting mild caution in global gold trading.

Positive Outlook amid Improved Macroeconomic Sentiment

According to analysts say the upbeat performance reflects improving investor sentiment, underpinned by easing inflation, relative exchange rate stability, and a steady macroeconomic outlook.

As listed companies begin releasing their third-quarter financial results, traders expect moderate gains across most sectors.

The combination of falling inflation and improved liquidity conditions is expected to support portfolio rebalancing towards equities, particularly financial and consumer-focused stocks.

Despite global uncertainties, the GSE’s year-to-date rally of more than 70 per cent underscores the resilience and depth of Ghana’s capital market in 2025.
